Forty years in fashion called for more than a cake, a toast and a polite round of applause. Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla answered with a full-blown spectacle. To mark four decades of their eponymous label, the designer duo transformed Mubarak Baug, their newly opened South Mumbai flagship, into a stage for maximalism, couture and theatrical excess.

Mubarak Baug became a living AJSK tableau, with 50 of the house’s original and contemporary muses including Madhu Sapre, Carol Gracias, Sheetal Mallar and Rahul Dev arriving in limousines draped in couture. Then, in true AJSK fashion, the evening took an unexpected turn: the models broke into two fashion flash mobs, joined by dancers choreographed by Lubna Adams and Rian Mistry.

The flash mobs set the mood as a constellation of the house’s most iconic muses, friends and clients including Sonam Kapoor and Nita Ambani stepped out in archival creations that have become part of AJSK lore. One performance unfolded inside the Archival Museum, turning the house’s past into part of the spectacle.

The anniversary was ultimately a celebration of AJSK’s greatest signature: craft with attitude. From Chikankari and mirror work to Resham and Vasli, four decades of Indian embroidery were reworked into extravagant couture ornament elevated to art.
