Netflix Unveils First Look of Unaccustomed Earth

The series explores love, loss, longing and belonging within a close-knit Indian American community.
Showrun by Madhuri Shekar, the series stars Freida Pinto as Parul Chaudhury and Siddharth as Amit, alongside Indraneil Sengupta, Parveen Kaur, Sarayu Blue, Justin Bartha, Adi Roy, Iyla Sundarsingh Mckaig and Jayant Kripalani. Unaccustomed Earth will premiere on Netflix on December 17.
Set against the culturally vibrant communities of Cambridge and Boston, Massachusetts, the story follows Parul, a wife and mother who gave up her college love to honour her father’s wishes. After receiving a life-changing cancer diagnosis, she moves her family from India back to Cambridge, the place she once considered home.
Determined to pursue the life she had left behind, Parul’s choices begin to reshape the lives of those around her, with consequences that ripple through the immigrant community.
“Every character has something universal… From the perspective of Parul’s character is the question, ‘How far would you go to live the dream that you really want to live? And are you up for the consequences?’” said Freida Pinto.
Shekar, who serves as showrunner, executive producer and writer, described the process of adapting Lahiri’s Pulitzer Prize-winning collection into a single interconnected narrative.
“This image came to me of all of these characters from the different stories sitting around the Thanksgiving table together… these connections started forming between them. This beautiful community just blossomed,” Shekar said.
